MADISON –
Pat McDonald (
Fr.-Port Washington, Wis.) scored a career-high 25 points and the Lakeland College men's basketball team outlasted Edgewood College for an 87-83 win in overtime Wednesday night on the road at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
The Muskies got the last word in a game that included 16 ties and 13 lead changes and were able to keep pace in the chase for a spot in the six-team Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament. Lakeland improved to 12-9 overall and 8-8 in the NACC, remaining in a tie with Rockford (Ill.) University for sixth in the standings with four regular season games to play.
The Muskies withstood a spirited effort from Edgewood (2-18 overall, 2-13 NACC), which remained red-hot from three-point range and hit 13 triples, its third straight game with at least 12 three-pointers made. Lakeland also bounced back on several occasions throughout the game, rolling with the punches after several blows from the Eagles.
Edgewood went on a quick 12-2 run after halftime to take a 46-38 lead with 16:46 left in regulation, and the Eagles would eventually go ahead by as many as nine. The Muskies responded with a 16-4 spurt of their own midway through the half and took the lead back, going ahead 59-56, after
Tanner Hackl (
Sr.-West De Pere, Wis.) hit a jumper with 7:20 to play in regulation.
The Eagles would score five straight to retake the lead, though, and although the Muskies were able to tie it three times, Lakeland would not lead again until McDonald hit a jumper with 40 seconds left to make it 72-70. Edgewood's Spencer Barnes tied it up again with 27 seconds left, though, and the contest went to overtime.
Brandon James (
So.-Rockford, Ill.) scored the first five points of overtime to give the Muskies a 77-72 lead, but the Eagles bounced right back and tied the game at 77-77 and again at 79-all. McDonald converted a free throw with 2:33 left to put Lakeland ahead for good, and then clinched the game with four free throws in the final 26 seconds.
Joshuan McNeal (
So.-Chicago, Ill.) also scored a career high with 19 points and added nine rebounds.
Travis Kell (
Jr.-Madison, Wis.) added 17 points and a career-best 15 rebounds, helping Lakeland to a 51-43 rebounding advantage.
The Muskies shot 29 of 70 (41.4%) and hit 8 of 20 from three-point range (40.0%). Lakeland also hit 21 of 32 from the free throw line (65.6%).
Barnes scored 25 to lead the Eagles, who shot 40.0% (30 of 75) and made 13 of 39 from three-point range (33.3%).
Lakeland returns home Saturday to face Dominican (Ill.) University for a 2 p.m. tip-off at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
