Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

No. 14 MSOE outlasts Lakeland men’s volleyball squad in four sets

The Lakeland College men's volleyball team returned home for the first time in more than a month but dropped a four-set decision to nationally ranked Milwaukee School of Engineering Friday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The teams split the first two sets before the Raiders won the final two for a 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 25-15 victory. MSOE remained undefeated at 9-0 in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (14-6 overall), while Lakeland dropped to 8-2 in the MCVL and 15-7 overall.

MSOE entered the game ranked 14th nationally in the latest AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 15 Coaches Poll, and the Raiders outlasted the Muskies in every sense. MSOE slowly pulled away in the match, the same way it did in three of the four sets.

The Muskies played well at the start of all four sets, reaching eight points first in every set. Lakeland held a five-point lead in the first set, was tied at 11-11 in the third set and was ahead 8-7 in the fourth, but dropped all three sets.

The Muskies could quite match MSOE's firepower, hitting .117 for the night with 38 kills and 23 errors in 128 attacks. Casey Bolda (Jr.-Honolulu, Hawaii), Dan Matijevic (Jr.-Palatine, Ill.), Tim Robbins (Jr.-Wheaton, Ill.) and Matt Stolz (Jr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) all finished with nine kills each, but the Raiders were a touch better, hitting .219 as a team.

Addison Mertler (Fr.-Boca Raton, Fla.) finished with 36 assists, while Kyle Krogstad (Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) posted a team-best 12 digs. Robbins also added six block assists.

Sam Stealey led MSOE with 18 kills, while setter Quin Krisik finished with 41 assists plus a match-high 17 digs.

Lakeland's task is no easier tomorrow when it hosts Carthage College at 3 p.m. The Red Men are also undefeated in the MCVL and are currently ranked third in Division III.
