CLERMONT, Fla. – The Lakeland College softball team hammered out 26 hits in just 10 innings of work, dominating both games Monday in posting the first two wins on its spring break trip.
The Muskies handled Muhlenberg (Pa.) College 12-3 in their first game and then topped Penn State-Brandywine 10-2 in the nightcap. Both games ended on account of the eight-run rule after five innings, and with the two wins Lakeland is now 2-2 on its Florida trip and 4-4 overall this year.
The Muskies got right to work against Muhlenberg (0-5 overall), scoring three times in the first and six runs in the third inning. Lakeland would not cool down all day and finished scoring runs in eight of 10 innings.
Sami Jo Williams (
Jr.-Sussex, Wis.) led off the first game with a solo home run and
Rosa Gonzalez (
So.-Elwood, Ill.) added a two-run homer two batters later.
Jocelyn Yeager (
Jr.-Elm Grove, Wis.) also added a two-run round-tripper in the first game.
Gonzalez and
Carly Brault (
So.-Brillion, Wis.) both finished with two hits and three runs batted in each, and Williams,
Hailey Jester (
So.-Salem, Wis.) and
Calie Delisi (
So.-Oak Forest, Ill.) all added two hits apiece as Lakeland finished with 15 hits in the first game.
Savannah Stenlund (
So.-Rapid River, Mich.) and
A.J. Zickuhr (
Fr.-Bettendorf, Iowa) combined to hold the fort in the circle. Stenlund started and pitched the first two innings before Zickuhr came on in the third, and the two combined to allow two hits and just one earned run.
Lakeland also came out fast against Penn State-Brandywine (0-6 overall), scoring three in the bottom of the first and blowing it open with two in the fourth and four more to end the game in the fifth.
Gonzalez hit her second home run of the day in the first inning, a three-run shot, and finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Brault also added three hits and Yeager and Delisi both posted two hits as part of an 11-hit attack.
Taylor Bush (
Fr.-Waukesha, Wis.) pitched a complete game and allowed three hits and two runs (one earned) with two strikeouts.
