RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Concordia University Chicago scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning to deal the Lakeland College softball team a tough 5-4 loss Monday afternoon in the second game of the teams' Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader.
The Cougars also posted a 6-3 win in the first game of the twinbill. The Muskies again were competitive all the way through both games but dropped to 9-11 overall and 1-5 in NACC games.
Lakeland held a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the final frame of the second game, having received an RBI single by
Jocelyn Yeager (
Jr.-Elm Grove, Wis.) and a two-run double from
Mikayla Hilton (
Jr.-Port Washington, Wis.) in the third inning, plus a run-scoring single by
Angela Tribuzio (
So.-Huntley, Ill.) in the seventh.
The Cougars (14-5 overall, 3-3 NACC) attempted a rally in the bottom of the seventh but were down to their final out with runners at second and third when Melissa Balkema singled to center field, driving in both runs. Balkema also moved to second on a throw home, and that was key one batter later when Meghan Johnson singled to left center, scoring Balkema with the winning run.
Lakeland did all of its offensive damage in the first game with the long ball. Tribuzio hit a solo homer in the fourth to open the scoring, but Concordia answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth. The Muskies then closed within 4-3 after Tribuzio and Hilton hit back-to-back shots to left to lead off the sixth.
The Cougars answered again, though, with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, though the inning ended with a double play after
Calie Delisi (
So.-Oak Forest, Ill.) caught a fly ball to center and threw out a runner at the plate to end the inning. Lakeland put two runners on in the top of the seventh but got no further.
Delisi and Tribuzio both finished with four hits on the day, while Yeager and Hilton added three hits each.
Taylor Bush (
Fr.-Waukesha, Wis.) took the loss pitching in both games, going the distance in the opener and coming on in relief of
A.J. Zickuhr (
Fr.-Bettendorf, Iowa) in the second, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings.
The Muskies will try again to play a home opener on Wednesday when they welcome Marian University for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
