Lakeland College will make its first appearance in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Softball Tournament since 2012 after closing its regular season with a sweep of Milwaukee School of Engineering Saturday afternoon.
The Muskies held off the Raiders 4-3 in the first game to clinch their spot in the tourney, and then took advantage of a chance to improve their positioning with an 8-0 win in five innings in the second game.
With the wins, Lakeland wrapped up the regular season with a 21-15 overall mark and is 13-9 in NACC play. With two losses by Concordia University Chicago on Saturday, the Muskies also moved past the Cougars in the standings and now will be at least the No. 5 seed in the tourney, and even has a chance to move up to the fourth seed if Benedictine (Ill.) University were to lose twice to Dominican (Ill.) University on Sunday.
Lakeland manufactured all four of its runs in the opener in the first two innings, needing just two hits to take an early 4-1 lead.
Calie Delisi (
So.-Oak Forest, Ill.) stole third and scored on a throwing error in the first for a 1-0 lead, and both
Jessica Beaudry (
So.-Gladstone, Mich.) and
A.J. Zickuhr (
Fr.-Bettendorf, Iowa) produced run-scoring ground outs as part of a three-run second inning that put the Muskies ahead 4-1.
The Muskies would only get two hits the rest of the way from
Sami Jo Williams (
Jr.-Sussex, Wis.), including a two-out triple in the sixth, but it would be just enough. MSOE (12-20 overall, 8-14 NACC) put up a fight in the seventh with a pair of runs, but the tying run was thrown out at home plate.
Taylor Bush (
Fr.-Waukesha, Wis.) finished off a complete game, scattering 10 hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Lakeland pounced on the Raiders in the second game, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first and never looking back.
Mikayla Hilton (
Jr.-Port Washington, Wis.) doubled in a run,
Caten Teff (
Jr.-Alpena, Mich.) doubled to drive in two more, and Williams followed with her second triple of the day to make it 4-0.
The Raiders were stymied throughout, as
Savannah Stenlund (
So.-Rapid River, Mich.) allowed just two hits over five innings for the shutout. She received more run support in the fourth and fifth innings, with Delisi and
Meghan Etten (
Fr.-Elkhorn, Wis.) both driving in runs in the fourth and then
Carleigh Johnson (
Fr.-Appleton, Wis.) doubled with two outs in the fifth to score both Hilton and
Molly Talaska (
Jr.-Oswego, Ill.) to end the game on account of the eight-run rule.
Hilton and Williams both had two hits in the second game, part of a 10-hit attack that included eight different players registering hits and featured five extra-base hits.
Lakeland will begin play in the NACC Tournament on Thursday at noon at Alverno Field in Milwaukee. The Muskies will be in the game between teams seeded No. 4 and 5, and the winner will play again later that day at 4 p.m. against the tournament's top seed.
