Allison Errthum (
Jr.-Joliet, Ill.) and
Madison Schweitzer (
Fr.-Thornton, Ill.) combined for 11 of the Lakeland University women's volleyball team's season-high 15 service aces and the Muskies outlasted stubborn Wisconsin Lutheran College in four sets Wednesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
Errthum served six aces and Schweitzer added five more as the Muskies survived an off night on the attack to prevail by a 25-19, 24-26, 25-17, 27-25 score. Lakeland also won its home opener and its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener and stayed over the .500 mark at 7-5 overall.
The Muskies pounded the Warriors (7-6 overall, 0-3 NACC) with serves all night, and the aces played a big role in making up for a .060 attack percentage that included 44 kills but also 34 errors. It was hardly a work of art, but as rough as that was on the attack, the visitors struggled even more with 29 kills and 29 errors.
Lakeland was in control most of the night, trailing only briefly in the three sets it won and even making a spirited comeback at the end of the second set. The two teams had just three lead changes combined over the first, third and fourth sets, and the Muskies fought back from 21-14 down in the second set to tie on three occasions before WLC closed out the set.
Brittini Scoles (
Jr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) paced the Muskies with 12 kills.
Shannon Bishop (
Fr.-River Grove, Ill.) added nine kills and four blocks (one solo, three assisted), while Schweitzer finished with 37 assists.
Four players also finished with at least 15 digs. Errthum paced the team with 17,
Taylor Levitt (
Sr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) tallied 16 and both Schweitzer and
Emma Bruder (
So.-Frankfort, Ill.) added 15 digs each.
Britley Grulke led Wisconsin Lutheran with nine kills but also added 10 errors along with 16 digs. Megan Wierzbicki led the Warriors with a match-high 20 digs.
Lakeland now gets ready for the IIAC-NACC Challenge, where NACC schools will face members of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Muskies open play in Waverly, Iowa, on Friday against Buena Vista (Iowa) University at 1 p.m.
