Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lakeland drops both ends of soccer doubleheader with Dominican

The Lakeland University men's and women's soccer teams both had tough assignments on Saturday and were defeated by Dominican (Ill.) University as part of a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Challenge doubleheader.

The Stars are among the conference's top soccer clubs on both sides, and they won the initial battle between the school's women's teams 8-0. Dominican also won the men's match by a 3-0 score.

The Muskies women's team (1-7 overall, 0-2 NACC) stayed within a goal for 30 minutes and still trailed just 3-0 after 50 minutes before the Stars poured it on late. Dominican scored five second-half goals, including three in the final 20 minutes.

Seven different players scored goals for the Stars (4-3 overall, 1-1 NACC), who outshot Lakeland 29-2. Karisa Rowland (Fr.-Peoria, Ariz.) made 12 saves in goal for the Muskies.

The Lakeland men's team also faced a formidable task against a Dominican program that has long been the standard in the NACC. The Stars scored three goals in the first 22 minutes but the Muskies played well the rest of the way, holding the visitors off the scoreboard and even getting a few chances in the second half.

Lakeland made a push deep into the Stars' end midway through the half that was eventually stifled in the corner, but came back again soon after. John Bentler (Fr.-Seattle, Wash.) struck a free kick that required a good save by Dominican goalkeeper Gabriel Gongora in the 72nd minute, and the Muskies also had an opportunity on a corner kick that was eventually cleared away.

Thomis Mannebach (Jr.-Florence, Wis.) made eight saves in goal for Lakeland. Gongora made two saves for the shutout for Dominican.

Both Muskies teams are in action next on Wednesday. The Lakeland women host Wisconsin Lutheran College at 3:30 p.m., while the men will also face WLC on the road in Milwaukee at 7 p.m.
