Cheese, alumni, Falcons all part of big NACC opener for Muskies

The Lakeland University football team and Concordia University Wisconsin renew acquaintances once again when they meet for the 25th annual Cheese Bowl game at Taylor Memorial Field Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

The Muskies' and Falcons' annual game takes on added significance this year in multiple ways. It also is Homecoming for Lakeland, and the game also marks the open of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference schedule for both teams.

The Muskies enter with a 2-1 record after a 56-0 loss last week at home to nationally ranked UW-Platteville. The Pioneers-currently in the top 10 in both the D3football.com and AFCA Coaches Poll-held the ball for more than 38 minutes and converted 12 of 19 third downs, while Lakeland was ineffective on offense with just 160 yards total. Mason Ross (Jr.-Sussex, Wis.) led the defense with a career-best nine tackles plus a forced fumble.

Concordia (2-1 overall) was idle a week ago but was dealt their first loss of the season two weeks ago, as Alma (Mich.) rallied in the final minutes to win 31-28 in the MIAA-NACC Challenge. The Falcons had just scored three straight touchdowns to come back from a 24-7 deficit to take the lead late, but the Scots drove 65 yards in the final two minutes for the winning touchdown. CUW previously defeated Finlandia (Mich.) and Augsburg (Minn.) in its first two games and is near its win total from all of last year, when it finished 3-7 overall and 3-3 in the NACC.

The Falcons hold a 21-15 lead in the series that began in 1980 and has been played every year since. The Muskies have won the last two meetings, though, including a 48-21 win in the rain a year ago in Mequon. Michael Whitley (Jr.-Vidalia, La.) passed for 383 yards and four touchdowns, Kezlow Smith (Sr.-Pontiac, Mich.) rushed for 100 yards and two scores and Dezmen Morse (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) caught eight passes for 177 yards. Concordia holds a 14-10 edge in Cheese Bowl games since the trophy was first awarded in 1992.

A live broadcast and live statistics for the game will be available at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/lc/. Baxter Colburn will call the play-by-play and will be joined by Michael Cyr and Annalise Jasinski.
