Muskies finish strong at Lake Forest tourney for 3-1 start to season

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Led by junior hitter Allison Errthum (Joliet, Ill.) earning all-tournament honors, the Lakeland University women's volleyball team capped the Lake Forest College Forester Invitational with two wins Saturday afternoon.

The Muskies battled back in dramatic fashion in the final set to top the University of Dubuque in five sets for a 25-18, 18-25, 25-23, 16-25, 15-10 win to start the day, and then finished the tourney with a 26-28, 25-12, 25-15, 25-17 win over host Lake Forest. Lakeland comes out of its first weekend of the season with a 3-1 record that included only a four-set loss to Alma (Mich.) College Friday night.

Brittini Scoles (Jr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) finished with 13 kills in the first match, one of four Muskies in double figures on the attack. Errthum and Shannon Bishop (Fr.-River Grove, Ill.) both posted 11 kills each and Kathy Flanagan (Sr.-Midlothian, Ill.) added 10 kills.

Madison Schweitzer (Fr.-Thornton, Ill.) set the offense with 34 assists and also topped the defense with 20 digs. Emma Bruder (So.-Frankfort, Ill.) added 16 digs and Errthum posted 15 more in a match that saw momentum shift by the set before Lakeland finished the fifth set on a 10-1 run for the win. The Muskies got behind 8-4 early in the fifth set before rallying with four kills by Bishop and two more from Errthum in a stunning turn of events at the end.

Lakeland lost a tough first set against Lake Forest, one that included 11 ties and seven lead changes, but the Muskies trailed only briefly early in the third and fourth sets the rest of the way.

Flanagan notched 11 kills and Bishop added 10 more, Schweitzer totaled 36 assists and 16 digs and Bruder and Brianna Johnson (So.-Altoona, Wis.) both had 16 digs each. Flanagan also had three solo and three assisted blocks as the Muskies finished with nine blocks total.

Errthum was named to the five-player all-tournament team after finishing the weekend with 30 kills, 49 digs, eight service aces and seven blocks.

Lakeland is in action again Wednesday when it faces nationally ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on the road at 7 p.m.
