FOND DU LAC – The Lakeland University women's basketball team held Marian University to single digit point totals in three quarters and 24.5% shooting for the game in a 54-34 victory Tuesday night at Marian's Sadoff Gymnasium.
The Muskies withstood a tough offensive night of their own to improve to 7-5 overall. Lakeland now has won three straight games and also improved to 5-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
The Muskies never trailed in the game and held Marian (2-9 overall, 1-5 NACC) to just two points in the first 10 minutes in building a 10-2 lead. Lakeland also shut down the hosts to the tune of seven points in the second quarter and eight points in the fourth.
The Muskies led 25-9 at halftime and were cruising through the third quarter when the Sabres made a brief run, getting within 10 near the end of the quarter.
Bailey Grayvold (
Sr.-Norway, Mich.) answered with a triple the next time down, though, and Marian never got closer than 13 the rest of the way.
Grayvold finished with 17 points and added 10 rebounds and five steals, while
Maddy Doll (
Jr.-Florence, Wis.) added 12 points.
Miranda Jacobson (
So.-Felch, Mich.) finished with nine points,
Rachel Stankevich (
Jr.-Goodman, Wis.) scored eight points and added six steals, and
Kayla Clark (
Sr.-West Bend, Wis.) was held scoreless but handed out eight assists.
Lakeland shot 36.2% for the game, making 21 of 58 shots. The Muskies also committed 20 turnovers, but defensively limited Marian to 13 of 53 shooting and forced 21 turnovers. Nicole Paulus scored 24 points for the Sabres, accounting for all but 10 points of her team's total.
Lakeland is back in action Saturday when it hosts Dominican (Ill.) University for a 2 p.m. tip-off at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
