Elizabeth Siebert (
So.-Mount Pulaski, Ill.) scored her first collegiate goal less than eight minutes into the match, opening the gates for the Lakeland University women's soccer team in a 6-0 win over Alverno College Saturday night at Taylor Field.
The Muskies won their second straight match and got their first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference victory of the season, improving to 5-11 overall and 1-7 in the NACC. Lakeland also improved to 5-3 at home this year, clinching a winning record in its first season at Taylor Field, and the five wins are the most since 2013 and tied for the most since the Muskies won 10 times in 2008.
All 13 healthy players made significant contributions in Lakeland's second win by a 6-0 score this week. Eight different players recorded at least one point, and Senior Night even saw the night's honored guest score as
Becca Giessen (
Sr.-West Bend, Wis.) converted a penalty kick in the 74th minute for the Muskies' final tally.
Lakeland got on the board just seven minutes, 35 seconds into the match when
Brianna Johnson (
So.-Green Bay, Wis.) crossed a ball from the right side across the goal and through an attempt to field it by goalkeeper Allison Weick. Siebert was making a run on the left side and got to the ball before an Alverno defender and deposited it in for her first goal as a Muskie.
The Muskies got on the board again less than three minutes later.
Hope Cerney (
Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) outworked a defender for the ball on the left side and fed a pass into the box, where
Karisa Rowland (
So.-Peoria, Ariz.) was there to send it in to make it 2-0.
Lakeland went ahead 3-0 in the 28th minute when Johnson was the recipient of a defensive error by the Inferno and took advantage, scoring from 15 yards out. The Muskies carried that lead to halftime, added on 3:27 into the second half when Giessen at midfield passed ahead to
Jenna Borts (
Fr.-Oak Creek, Wis.), who quickly sent ahead to
Stephanie Figueroa (
Jr.-Round Lake Park, Ill.). The outer midfielder then did the rest, dribbling through two defenders and uncorking a shot from just inside the box that found the net to make it 4-0.
Rowland added a second goal when
Alexa Piskule (
Sr.-Crystal Lake, Ill.) won a loose ball in front of the goal which went right to Rowland for an easy punch in and her fourth goal of the week. Giessen added the final touch when she was called on to take a PK and drilled it for the second goal of her four-year collegiate career.
The Muskies owned play with a 24-5 shot advantage, with Cerney regularly getting good runs and attempting nine shots and Borts (four) and Johnson (three) also combining for seven shots.
Grace Daehling (
Fr.-Sun Prairie, Wis.) made three saves for her second straight shutout and her fourth this season. She made several smothering stops before Alverno players could get off shots and also received help from her defense protecting empty nets several times, including a block by
Rachel Wilson (
Fr.-Gilbert, Ariz.) in the second half to keep the guests off the board.
Lakeland is home one more time this season when it welcomes Milwaukee School of Engineering Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Taylor Field. The Muskies also are in action tomorrow when they travel to face Aurora University at 2 p.m. to make up a game postponed by weather last weekend.
