Milwaukee School of Engineering broke through for two goals late in the first half and defeated a determined Lakeland University women's soccer team 4-0 Wednesday night at Taylor Field in the Muskies' season finale.
Lakeland gave a quality effort despite a heavy disadvantage in time of possession, but saw its season come to a close with a loss on a chilly night. The Raiders, meanwhile, wrapped up the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference regular season title and the top seed in the NACC Tournament, finishing the regular season 9-1 in conference (11-8 overall).
The shorthanded Muskies (5-13 overall, 1-9 NACC) responded after an ugly 11-0 loss to Aurora University on Sunday, making MSOE work for everything in the first half even with only 13 players in uniform and keeping the guests off the scoreboard for more than 20 minutes despite numerous chances.
Grace Daehling (
Fr.-Sun Prairie, Wis.) made eight of her 13 saves in the first half, and the backline of the defense including
Marissa Brakob (
Jr.-Hustisford, Wis.),
Zyta Mueller (
Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.) and
Rachel Wilson (
Fr.-Gilbert, Ariz.) plus plucky play throughout the field kept the Raiders scoreless until the 25th minute. That's when Brooke Zidek collected a loose ball on the right side inside the 18 and fired a shot that nicked the right goalpost and caromed into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
MSOE added a second goal at 35:46 of the match when Zidek collected a loose ball following a free kick by Maddie Howell that deflected off two Muskies defenders, knocking it in to make it 2-0. That still represented something of a win after a first half when the Raiders finished with a 22-1 shot advantage.
MSOE added onto its total in the second half with some help from Lakeland. A pulldown on the right side of the box chasing a loose ball away from the goal was whistled and resulted in a penalty kick converted by Gracie Horton. The Raiders' fourth goal in the 70th minute came even easier, as a Muskies defensive error passing resulted in an own goal.
The Raiders finished with a 34-3 advantage in shot attempts, even as Lakeland's forward line of
Hope Cerney (
Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.),
Brianna Johnson (
So.-Green Bay, Wis.) and
Makenna Waller (
So.-De Pere, Wis.) worked hard and had several nice runs, especially in the first half. Cerney attempted two shots, including the only one on goal, and Waller added a shot late in the second half.
The match was the final one for senior
Becca Giessen (
Sr.-West Bend, Wis.), who completed her career playing in 66 career matches. Lakeland's 5-13 record in Head Coach
Robert Blake's first season was still the team's best win percentage since finishing 10-9 in the 2008 season.
