Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lakeland holds MSOE to 23.5% shooting for first NACC win

Maddy Doll (Sr.-Florence, Wis.) scored a career-best 21 points and the Lakeland University women's basketball team shut down Milwaukee School of Engineering defensively in a 56-33 win Saturday at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

Doll made 9 of 12 shots from the field and topped the 20-point mark for the first time in her career, providing a good chunk of the Muskies' offense. She also was a centerpiece on defense as Lakelan won for the first time in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play this season and improved to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The Muskies held the Raiders to 23.5% shooting and only 12 made field goals in the game. MSOE shot 12 of 51 from the field, including 5 of 26 in the second half (19.2%) and did not surpass the 30-point mark until less than two minutes remained in the game.

Lakeland never trailed in the game and was tied only once at 2-2. The Muskies' lead was single digits throughout the first half and 27-20 at halftime, but the hosts pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Raiders (2-2 overall, 1-1 NACC) 16-4 in that period.

Doll scored nine points in the third quarter and five more in the fourth, when Lakeland stretched the lead as far as 25 points on two occasions when freshman Kaity Birkholz (Fr.-Watertown, Wis.) hit two three-pointers off the bench for her first collegiate baskets.

Miranda Jacobson (Jr.-Felch, Mich.) was the lone other player in the game to score in double figures with 10 points plus six rebounds. Amanda Majewski (So.-Peshtigo, Wis.) added eight points plus four steals and Rachel Stankevich (Sr.-Goodman, Wis.) finishing with a game-high six assists, many on high-low passes to Doll. Megan Will (Fr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) also blocked three shots.

Lakeland shot 46.0% for the game, making 23 of 50 shots, including 12 of 22 in the second half (54.5%). The Muskies also outrebounded the Raiders 36-32.

Lakeland returns to play Tuesday when it travels to face Wisconsin Lutheran College for an NACC contest in Milwaukee at 7 p.m.
