Carroll rallies to trip up Muskies in final non-conference tilt

WAUKESHA – Carroll University rallied from a 10-point deficit in the game's latter stages and dealt the Lakeland University women's basketball team a tough 53-51 loss on the road Wednesday night.

The Muskies had an ice-cold night shooting and also tied a season high with 26 turnovers, and both contributed to a loss in their final non-conference game of the regular season. Lakeland is now 6-4 overall heading into the heart of Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play after the Christmas holiday.

The Muskies shot a season-low 26.9%, making 14 of 52 field goals, including 6 of 24 (25.0%) in the second half. Lakeland also was held to three field goals in the game's final 13 minutes, 49 seconds, a time in which the Pioneers (4-6 overall) made their move.

Carroll trailed 42-32 late in the third quarter after Maddy Doll (Sr.-Florence, Wis.) split a pair of free throws, but the hosts followed with a 13-2 run over the next four minutes to go ahead 45-44 with 6:55 left, their first lead since early in the first quarter.

Lakeland rebounded to score the next four points, with Miranda Jacobson (Jr.-Felch, Mich.) making two free throws and Rachel Stankevich (Sr.-Goodman, Wis.) hitting a jumper to make it 48-45, but the Muskies then went scoreless for the next 4 1/2 minutes.

Carroll's Brittney Wald tied the game at 49-49 with a layup with 2:50 remaining, and then put the Pioneers ahead a minute later with a jumper. Carroll added two free throws with 57 seconds left for a four-point lead, but Lakeland wasn't finished as Amanda Majewski (So.-Peshtigo, Wis.) scored on a driving layup with 42 seconds to play.

The Muskies did not foul and held defensively, forcing Carroll into a miss late in the shot clock, and they had a final chance after a timeout with nine seconds left. Janai' Farr (Fr.-Racine, Wis.) had an excellent look at a three-pointer just before the buzzer, but the shot hit off the rim and time expired.

Jacobson scored 13 points to lead the Muskies but was the lone player in double figures. The junior did also make 6 of 6 free throw attempts, part of a good 21-for-26 performance at the line for the entire team (80.8%).

Farr also added eight points off the bench while Doll led the team with eight rebounds as Lakeland posted a 43-37 advantage on the boards.

Wald led Carroll with 16 points. The Pioneers shot 36.2%, making 21 of 58 shots, and scored 45 of their 53 points in the paint or at the free-throw line.

The Muskies now are idle until after Christmas, with their next game at Edgewood College on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 4:15 p.m. in Madison.
