A fast start propelled the Lakeland University men's volleyball team to its fourth straight win, a three-set sweep of Wittenberg (Ohio) University Friday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies defeated the Tigers 25-18, 25-21, 25-23 in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League matchup, getting over the .500 mark overall for the first time this season. Lakeland is now 6-5 overall and also moved to 3-2 in the MCVL.
The Muskies were nearly flawless attacking in the first set, finishing with 15 kills and just one error in 26 attempts to set the tone the rest of the match. Lakeland then withstood challenges in the second and third sets to win the second meeting ever between the schools and also back up its win over the Tigers (4-6 overall, 1-2 MCVL) last year.
Matt Stolz (
Sr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) finished with 13 kills to lead the Lakeland attack, while
Tim Robbins (Sr.-Wheaton, Ill.) delivered seven kills in 10 attempts from his middle position.
Casey Bolda (
Sr.-Honolulu, Hawaii) and
Dakota Hunter (
So.-Waukesha, Wis.) also both added six kills each.
Addison Mertler (
So.-Boca Raton, Fla.) finished with 33 assists,
J.T. Levitt (
So.-Schaumburg, Ill.) finished with 10 digs, and both Robbins and
Desmond Williams (
So.-Riverside, Calif.) finished with four blocks (one solo, three assisted for each).
Lakeland hit .227 for the match with 36 kills and 14 errors in 97 attempts, while Wittenberg totaled 30 kills and 23 errors in 99 attempts. The Muskies also finished with an advantage on the serve with seven aces.
The Muskies return to action again on Wednesday when they host Loras (Iowa) College at home at 7 p.m. in another MCVL match.
