Matt Stolz (
Sr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) set a new Lakeland University men's volleyball record for career kills, part of another big performance in the Muskies' four-set win over Marian University Wednesday night in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League match.
Lakeland won the first two sets and then closed it out in the fourth for a 25-18, 25-15, 23-25, 25-18 win. The Muskies improved to 8-6 overall and moved to 5-3 in the MCVL Western Division.
Stolz set the mark for most kills in the four-year history of Lakeland's varsity program, breaking the career record of 746 kills previously set by Alec Redlich (2014-15). He broke the record in the first set and finished the night at 762 kills for his career, recording 21 kills Wednesday.
Stolz was part of an effective attack in which the Muskies finished with 48 kills and just 14 errors for a .315 attack percentage. Lakeland was particularly tough in the three sets it won with 37 kills and just seven errors for a robust .370 hitting rate.
Stolz also finished with eight digs, while
Casey Bolda (
Sr.-Honolulu, Hawaii) also added nine kills and seven digs.
Addison Mertler (
So.-Boca Raton, Fla.) finished with 41 assists,
J.T. Levitt (
So.-Schaumburg, Ill.) totaled 10 digs, and
Tim Robbins (
Sr.-Wheaton, Ill.) had seven blocks (three solo, four assisted) to lead a defense at the net that finished with 10 team blocks.
Marian (6-9 overall, 3-5 MCVL) was led by Aaron Wendels with 12 kills, but the Sabres hit just. 038 as a team with 40 kills but 35 errors. Cullen Liberski also finished with 16 digs.
Lakeland is back in action Friday night when it faces North Central (Ill.) College at 7 p.m. at home in the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
