Muskies tough at net, avoid errors in convincing sweep

Lakeland University put up a strong block at the net and kept errors to a minimum in defeating Marian University 25-16, 25-19, 25-13 Monday night in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League matchup at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies defeated the Sabres for the second time this year, completing a season sweep. Lakeland improved to 3-0 all-time against its rival from Fond du Lac and gained some separation from Marian in the MCVL Western Division standings.

The Muskies did their best work at the net, finishing with 11 team blocks. Desmond Williams (So.-Riverside, Calif.) posted five block assists and Tim Robbins (Sr.-Wheaton, Ill.) added a solo and three more block assists, and multiple players contributed as six finished with at least two block assists.

Lakeland (10-7 overall, 7-4 MCVL) was safe on the attack, with 27 kills but just nine errors in 78 attempts (.231 hitting percentage). The Muskies posted just two more kills Marian, but the guests also registered 30 hitting errors, finishing with a -.054 attack percentage for the night.

Matt Stolz (Sr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) finished with eight kills, seven digs and two service aces, while Robbins also added six kills in eight attempts. Casey Bolda (Sr.-Honolulu, Hawaii) posted a team-high seven digs, and Addison Mertler (So.-Boca Raton, Fla.) recorded 25 assists.

Marian (8-12 overall, 5-8 MCVL) was led by Jon Smallpage with seven kills, while libero Cullen Liberski notched a match-high 13 digs. The Muskies defeated the Sabres for the second time in 12 days, having also won a four-set match in Fond du Lac on March 1.

Lakeland is home again Thursday night when it welcomes Greenville (Ill.) College for a 6 p.m. start at the Woltzen Gym.
