Pair of tough-luck losses mark Muskies’ Thursday on spring break

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – A spring break trip filled with near misses continued for the Lakeland University softball team Thursday with it on the wrong end of two more one-run decisions Thursday.

The Muskies were defeated by Penn State University-Berks 3-2 in their opening game and then fell by a 1-0 score to Simpson (Iowa) College. Lakeland dropped to 5-7 overall including 3-5 on its spring break trip, with four of those losses now coming by one run each.

The Muskies lost a pair of pitching duels, and both in wrenching fashion. Both contests went down to the game's final at bat, with Lakeland coming out on the short end in both.

The Muskies carried a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh against Penn State-Berks when the Nittany Lions reached their first two batters with a single and a walk. A sacrifice bunt and a pop-up put runners at second and third with two outs when Jenna Heffner doubled to drive in two runs, including the game-winner.

Lakeland had a chance to turn the tables in the second game against Simpson when after trailing 1-0 since the top of the first inning, the Muskies loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Molly Talaska (Sr.-Oswego, Ill.) batted and hit a pop fly to center that was caught by Madi Bennett, but her throw home was not in time to get a runner tagging from third. Simpson appealed the play, though, and the Lakeland runner at third was called out for tagging up too early after the fly ball, resulting in the game ending.

The Muskies finishing with a combined six hits over the two games, with Niki Saviano (Fr.-Orland Park, Ill.) the only player to finish with two hits on the day and Sami Jo Williams (Sr.-Sussex, Wis.) posting the lone RBI. Saviano also pitched the first game and allowed eight hits and three runs (two earned) in 6 2/3 innings.

Taylor Bush (So.-Waukesha, Wis.) was an even harder-luck loser in the second game. Bush hurled a complete game and allowed just three hits and one unearned run, but took the loss as Lakeland was held to two hits in the game.

The Muskies will wrap up their spring break trip on Friday when they face Rowan (N.J.) University at 8 a.m. Central time and Penn State-Altoona following at 10:15 a.m.
