Taylor Bush (
So.-Waukesha, Wis.) and
Mackenzie Gray (
Fr.-Fernandina Beach, Fla.) hit home runs to cap a big finish in the first game and the Lakeland University softball team was even hotter with the bats in the second game in completing a doubleheader sweep of Mount Mary University Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play.
The Muskies defeated the Blue Angels by scores of 9-1 and 14-6, winning the opener in five innings and the second game in six innings. Lakeland took advantage of 26 hits over the twinbill and improved to 11-13 overall this season.
Bush hit a two-run homer in the second inning to get the Muskies' scoring for the day started, while Gray hit a two-run home run to cap a seven-run fifth inning and give Lakeland the win via the eight-run rule in the first game. Both homers were hit to left field and bounced off the top of the fence before bouncing over for the first career collegiate homers for both.
Gray went 2-for-3 in the first game with two runs scored, and she and the Muskies both were just warming up. The freshman was even better in game two, going 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored, and she led a 17-hit offensive attack.
Lakeland scored in every inning of the second game, running out to a 9-0 lead in the third inning before the Blue Angels (6-16 overall) fought back with four runs in the fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth.
Megan Laib (
Fr.-Tinley Park, Ill.) totaled three hits and
Carly Brault (
Jr.-Brillion, Wis.) and
Lexia Upson (
Fr.-Waterford, Mich.) added two hits each. Brault drove in three runs and scored twice and Upson drove in a run and also was one of 10 players with at least one run scored.
Morgan Schiedemeyer (
Fr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.) also drove in two runs and scored twice.
Bush picked up the win in the circle in the opener, throwing all five innings and allowing just two hits while striking out three.
Rikki Vela (
So.-Beach Park, Ill.) picked up the win in the second game by going four innings and allowing seven hits and four runs, while
Lindsay Cudecki (
Fr.-Chicago, Ill.) also covered two innings and allowed four hits and two runs.
The Muskies are back in action again Wednesday when they travel west on Highway 23 to face Marian University for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader at 5 p.m. in Fond du Lac.
