MEQUON, Wis. – The Lakeland University softball team couldn't have scripted a much tougher way to lose two close games when it dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Concordia University Wisconsin Sunday afternoon.
The Muskies lost by scores of 2-1 and 5-4, with the latter loss coming in 11 innings. Concordia won both games in its final at bat, and Lakeland saw its record drop to 8-10 overall and 2-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
The Muskies rallied in both games, including the first when, one out away from being defeated,
Jessica Beaudry (
Jr.-Gladstone, Mich.) hit a two-out home run in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 1-1. It was just Lakeland's second hit of the game against Concordia pitcher Emily Brekke, but the hosts bounced back in the bottom of the seventh and Molly O'Connell singled up the middle with one out to send in the winning run.
Lakeland also came back from a 4-1 deficit in the second game, scoring three times in the fifth to tie.
Megan Laib (
Fr.-Tinley Park, Ill.) hit a solo home run to lead off the inning, and
Paige Chladek (
Fr.-Orland Park, Ill.) followed later in the frame with a two-run homer to knot the score.
The teams played on and on from there. The Muskies walked a fine line, as Concordia (13-5 overall, 2-0 NACC) stranded three runners in the sixth, two in the ninth and then had two hits in the 10th, but
Taylor Bush (
So.-Waukesha, Wis.) continued to pitch out of trouble and
Sami Jo Williams (
Sr.-Sussex, Wis.) threw out the potential winning run at home plate after a double by Allison Peters.
Lakeland then put runners at first and second with nobody out in the top of the 11th, but Brekke-who came on to throw seven innings in relief-retired three straight to end the threat. The Falcons' Deidra Weinberger then reached on an error with one out in the bottom of the inning, and Carly Sobrilsky brought her home with two outs for the winning run.
Laib and Beaudry both had two hits in the doubleheader to lead the Muskies' hitters. Bush took the loss in both games despite pitching a combined 8 2/3 innings and allowing two runs (one earned).
Lakeland is back in action at home Saturday when it hosts Concordia University Chicago for a doubleheader at noon.
