AURORA, Ill. – Hits were few and mostly far between for the Lakeland University softball team as it lost twice to Aurora University Saturday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader.
The Muskies were defeated 4-0 in the first game and then lost 2-0 in the second contest. Lakeland dropped to 14-18 overall and is now 6-10 in the NACC with eight regular season games remaining, including six conference games.
The Muskies were held to eight hits on the day, including just two in the first game when they were held hitless until the sixth inning. Aurora scored all the runs it would need when it tallied three times in the third inning, and pitcher Britni Wilson threw a complete game, never allowing a runner past first base until the final inning.
Lakeland had six hits in the second game, three coming in the same inning. That came in the sixth, when three consecutive two-out singles by
Mackenzie Gray (
Fr.-Fernandina Beach, Fla.),
Hailey Jester (
Jr.-Salem, Wis.) and
Jessica Beaudry (
Jr.-Gladstone, Mich.) loaded the bases. The Muskies were unable to capitalize, though, as the inning ended with a ground out on the infield.
Lindsay Cudecki (
Fr.-Chicago, Ill.) went the distance pitching and took the hard-luck loss, allowing five hits and two runs in her first collegiate complete game. Beaudry and Jester both had two hits each on the day with one hit in each game.
Elaine Walker hit a two-run homer in the first game for Aurora (23-11 overall, 12-4 NACC), while Steph Starr added three hits on the day for the Spartans.
Lakeland is in action again Sunday when it travels to face Benedictine (Ill.) University with a doubleheader starting at noon in Lisle, Ill.
