Muskies get solid pitching, timely hitting in sweep of Sabercats

Freshmen Dylan Royce (Nekoosa, Wis.) and Mason Pechy (Diamond Bar, Calif.) both delivered strong pitching performances and the Lakeland University baseball team swept Maranatha Baptist University in both ends of a doubleheader Thursday afternoon.

Royce threw a complete game as the Muskies won the first game 5-1, and Pechy worked into the seventh in an 8-5 win in the second game. Lakeland weathered windy conditions nicely and is now 7-9 overall after the non-conference twinbill.

Royce allowed three hits while striking out six and walking just one while going the distance for the first time in his collegiate career. He allowed a single run in the first inning and held the Sabercats (1-11 overall) to one hit after the first, retiring the last eight batters he faced and 19 of the last 21.

He received all the run support he'd need in the bottom of the first, when Kenny Pekarek (Sr.-Sagola, Mich.) and Travis Regalado (So.-Willcox, Ariz.) both scored on wild pitches. Regalado, Jody Harrison (So.-Pontiac, Mich.) and Jaired Dozier (So.-Colorado Springs, Colo.) all added RBI singles later as the Muskies made the most of their five hits.

Lakeland used a balanced effort with multiple contributions in the second game. The Muskies' nine hits were spread among eight different starting players, including two hits from Sterling Dixon (Sr.-Grayslake, Ill.).

Lakeland scored single runs in the second and third innings before Maranatha Baptist scored three times in the fourth, taking advantage of three errors, two coming on high pop-ups as players fought the windy conditions. The Muskies bounced right back with three in the bottom of the fourth, though, including a two-run single by Cameron Sharp (So.-Pflugerville, Texas), and then added three more in the fifth with Dozier driving in two with a single up the middle and Regalado adding a sacrifice fly.

Pechy allowed seven hits and five runs (two earned) over 6 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. He gave way to Taylor Johann (Colleyville, Texas) in the seventh, and the freshman induced a game-ending 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded for his first save.

Lakeland is back in action Saturday when it travels to face rival Marian University in Fond du Lac for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
