John Bentler (
So.-Seattle, Wash.) got the Lakeland University men's soccer team on the board but Maranatha Baptist University rallied for three second-half goals and went ahead for a 4-1 win Tuesday night in a non-conference match.
Bentler scored the first goal of the season for the Muskies, putting in a rebound after a crossing pass by
Charles Apostolik (
Jr.-New Castle, Colo.) was deflected by the Maranatha goalkeeper in front of the goal. His first collegiate goal tied the score at 1-1in the 17th minute, a score that would hold into the second half.
Maranatha Baptist, which took the lead originally when Brett Cournoyer cleaned up a rebound in the 16th minute, took the lead back 10:52 into the second half on a goal by Nathan Akers, the first of his two in the match.
Akers added a penalty kick at 68:39 of the match, and Eric Fausto headed in the final goal in the 78th minute for the final margin.
Thomis Mannebach (
Jr.-Florence, Wis.) made 11 saves in goal for Lakeland (0-5 overall), which faced an uphill climb all match and was outshot 35-4.
The Muskies now get ready for their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener in eight days when they host Wisconsin Lutheran College next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Taylor Field.
