Vikings defeat Muskies in men’s soccer opener

APPLETON – Lawrence University scored three times in the second half, pulling away to defeat the Lakeland University men's soccer team 4-0 Friday evening at Lawrence's Banta Bowl.

The Muskies allowed an early score but then stayed within a goal for more than 50 minutes before the Vikings added on to their margin. Lakeland was defeated in its season opener and the first match under interim head coach Josh Mann.

Dylan Petrucci scored just 1:18 into the match for Lawrence (1-0), but the score remained that way until halftime. Josh Hogan (Jr.-Urbana, Ill.) had two of the Muskies' three shot attempts in the first half, including the only shot on goal just before halftime that was stopped by Vikings goalkeeper Julien Riviere.

Lakeland's defense held until the 55th minute, when Lewis Berger scored off a pair of assists to put Lawrence ahead 2-0. The Vikings struck again just 3:41 later when Jahad Alweleidat scored for a 3-0 lead. Alweleidat added a final goal with 4:35 left in the match for the final margin.

Jordan Salm (Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) made six saves in goal in his first collegiate start for the Muskies. Bonny Figueroa (So.-El Cajon, Calif.) led the Lakeland attack with three shot attempts, including a pair of shots on goal in the second half. One of his shots was a rebound after a John Bentler (So.-Seattle, Wash.) shot in the 64th minute, but the rebound was cleared away by a defender to prevent the Muskies from breaking through.

Lawrence outshot Lakeland 17-6 for the match and posted an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. Riviere made three saves for the shutout for the Vikings.

The Muskies are in action again Sunday when they travel to face Ripon College at 3:30 p.m. in Ripon.
