MILWAUKEE –
Hope Cerney (
Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) scored for the fourth time this season but the Lakeland University women's soccer team was defeated by Wisconsin Lutheran College 4-1 in its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener Wednesday night.
Cerney converted a penalty kick at 55 minutes, 50 seconds of the match to get the Muskies on the board and make the score 3-1, but they would get no closer and dropped to 3-4 overall this season.
Lakeland had its share of chances throughout the match, generating 15 shots, but it was Wisconsin Lutheran (2-6 overall, 1-0 NACC) which was more opportunistic in its 24 shot attempts.
The Warriors got on the board just 10:41 into the match on a goal by Kendra Schumacher, and WLC's Gabriella Metten put the Muskies in a 2-0 hole with an unassisted tally less than eight minutes later.
Wisconsin Lutheran pushed the lead to 3-0 late in the first half when Kali Boldebuck scored in the 38th minute. After Cerney's second-half penalty kick, the Warriors added a final goal in the 67th minute when Calli Tomko's free kick found the back of the net.
Grace Daehling (
Fr.-Sun Prairie, Wis.) made five saves in goal for the Muskies. Cerney (six shots) and sophomore Breanna Johnson (
Green Bay, Wis.) with five shots combined for 11 of Lakeland's 15 shot attempts, with defender
Rachel Wilson (
Fr.-Gilbert, Ariz.) also attempting two shots late, including a free kick on goal in the final minutes.
The Muskies are back home Saturday when they host Concordia University Chicago at 4:30 p.m. at Taylor Field.
