Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Marian explodes in second half to down Lakeland

Marian University scored seven times in the second half, blowing open a close game and going on to defeat the Lakeland University men's soccer team 8-1 Wednesday night at Taylor Field.

Alonso Fragoso scored three times, adding to his season goal total ranking among the leaders in NCAA Division III, and the Sabres' potent offense scored at least six goals for the third match this year. Four of Marian's goals came in a span of seven minutes 19 seconds, when the guests blew open what was a close game at halftime.

The Muskies (0-8 overall, 0-3 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) might have been tied at halftime were it not for some misfortune in the first half. Goalkeeper Thomis Mannebach (Sr.-Florence, Wis.) deflected away a shot by Stevie Tovar in a one-on-one situation, but the ball deflected off the back of a Lakeland defender and then bounced backward into the net for the opening score of the match.

The score remained 1-0 at halftime before the Sabres (6-4 overall, 1-2 NACC) made their move. Eric Rodriguez, Cade Klusendorf, Tovar and Fragoso scored in succession and Marian quickly built up a 5-1 lead.

The Muskies did get one goal back shortly after Fragoso's first goal, as John Bentler (So.-Seattle, Wash.) turned, shot and scored from the left wing from 20 yards out for his second goal of the season. Lakeland would get no closer, though, and the visitors scored three more times, two by Fragoso, who moved into a tie for the individual lead in Division III with 15 goals this season.

Bentler and Charles Apostolik (Jr.-New Castle, Colo.) generated a good share of the Muskies' offense with three shot attempts each. Garrett Duffin (Jr.-Princeton, Ill.) also added two shots attempts, including a near miss on a shot from the right side that went high and wide in the first half.

Mannebach made 12 saves in goal for Lakeland. Five different players scored goals for Marian, while Fragoso finished with three goals and two assists and Tovar added a goal and two assists.

The Muskies are back on the road Saturday when they travel to take on Dominican University at noon in River Forest, Ill.
