Northland College scored late in both halves and the Lakeland University men's soccer team was defeated 2-0 in its home opener Thursday evening.
The Muskies put up a fight but lost their first game ever at Taylor Field and their first matchup with Northland since 1991. Lakeland dropped to 0-3 this season, while the LumberJacks earned their first win under first-year coach Joel Person.
Northland got on the board with just over four minutes left in the first half. The Muskies were unable to clear a corner kick, and Ben Derezinski took advantage of a loose ball in the box and punched it in for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
Lakeland faced an uphill battle in the second half, as the LumberJacks carried play much of the time and had a number of scoring chances. The Muskies had chances of their own, including early in the half when
Charles Apostolik (
Jr.-New Castle, Colo.) received a pass down the left side from
John Bentler (
So.-Seattle, Wash.), rushed in and then cut back, only to have his hard shot stopped by Northland goalkeeper Thomas Whiting.
The hosts never could capitalize, though, and the Jacks added an insurance goal with 2:44 left. Hector Gaona sliced left to right on the attack and then struck a shot from 30 yards out that went over
Thomis Mannebach (
Jr.-Florence, Wis.) for a 2-0 lead.
Mannebach made seven saves as Northland outshot Lakeland 20-11, including a 10-5 edge in shots on goal.
Bonny Figueroa (
So.-Steele Canyon, Calif.) attempted five shots, including three on goal, while Apostolik also added four shot attempts.
Gaona finished with a goal and an assist for the LumberJacks. Whiting made five saves to earn the shutout.
Lakeland is in action again Saturday, when it hosts Moody Bible Institute (Ill.) for a 5 p.m. match at Taylor Field.
