Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Rookies shine as Muskies top Maranatha Baptist

Freshmen Hope Cerney (Green Bay, Wis.) and Jenna Borts (Oak Creek, Wis.) both scored goals and fellow frosh Grace Daehling (Sun Prairie, Wis.) recorded her first collegiate shutout as the Lakeland University women's soccer team defeated Maranatha Baptist University 2-0 Friday afternoon at Taylor Field.

The Muskies scored twice in the second half and gave little ground defensively in defeating the Sabercats for the first time in six years and notching their second win of the year. At 2-2 overall, Lakeland has already tied its win total for all of last season, when it finished 2-15-1.

Cerney scored her first collegiate goal in the 58th minute. A handball in the box gave the Muskies a penalty kick, and Cerney converted over MBU goalkeeper Hannah Anderson's right shoulder for a 1-0 lead.

Lakeland held the slim lead and rarely allowed the Sabercats (1-2 overall) to push deep into their end. The Muskies added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute, though, when a throw-in by Zyta Mueller (Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.) rolled to an open spot near the middle of the field. Borts was there and struck a hard shot from nearly 30 yards out that found the upper right corner of the net for her second goal of the season.

Maranatha Baptist threatened briefly on several occasions late, getting a pair of corner kicks and one shot wide by forward Alexis Sponable. The Sabercats did not put a shot on goal in the second half, though, with the defense including Marissa Brakob (Jr.-Hustisford, Wis.), Becca Giessen (Sr.-West Bend, Wis.) and Rachel Wilson (Fr.-Gilbert, Ariz.) keeping the ball from getting near the goal, and Daehling finished with a shutout with three saves.

The Muskies outshot the guests 12-8 in the match, with Cerney and Borts combining for nine of 12 shots. The shot differential was even at 5-5 after one half before Lakeland carried play much of the second half.

Lakeland is in action again tomorrow when it faces Westminster (Mo.) College at noon in Milwaukee. The match will be played at Alverno College and is part of the Alverno Cup four-team invitational.
