LISLE, Ill. – The Lakeland University women's basketball team knocked off one of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's top teams on the road, earning a satisfying 70-57 win over Benedictine University Saturday at the Rice Center.
The Muskies seized control of the game late in the second quarter and never trailed again in defeating an Eagles team that came into the game tied for second in the NACC. Lakeland gave Benedictine just its third conference loss and gained a split of the season series between the teams, answering a narrow loss to the Eagles 2 1/2 weeks earlier.
The Muskies (10-7 overall, 7-5 NACC) got a balanced scoring effort, with five players scoring in double figures led by
Amanda Majewski (
So.-Peshtigo, Wis.) with 15 points. Lakeland also hammered the hosts on the glass to the tune of a 53-36 rebounding advantage, the Muskies' biggest rebounding advantage since a plus-18 in their second game this season against Illinois Tech.
That included a 15-7 advantage on the boards in the pivotal second quarter, when Lakeland outscored Benedictine 19-12 to take a 33-24 halftime lead. The Muskies outscored the Eagles 12-4 to close the half, including a pair of three-pointers by Majewski.
Lakeland then scored the first six points of the second half to take its biggest lead of the game at 39-24, though Benedictine (12-5 overall, 9-3 NACC) would score 10 straight points to get back within five. The Eagles would get no closer the rest of the way, though, and the Muskies stretched it out in the fourth quarter when another quick 6-0 spurt capped by another Majewski three-pointer made it 57-44 with 5 minutes, 49 seconds left.
Miranda Jacobson (
Jr.-Felch, Mich.) and
Maddy Doll (
Sr.-Florence, Mich.) both scored 13 points each and added 10 and nine rebounds, respectively.
Rachel Stankevich (
Sr.-Goodman, Wis.) and
Megan Will (
Fr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) also added 11 points each, with Stankevich also contributing a game-high six assists.
Lakeland made 23 of 55 shots from the floor (41.8%), including 6 of 13 from three-point range. The Muskies also converted 18 of 24 free throws (75.0%), including 15 of 19 in the second half.
Benedictine shot just 30.1% for the game, making 22 of 73 field goals. The Eagles also came into the game second in the NACC in three-pointers made but hit just 4 of 26 from long distance (15.4%).
The Muskies are on the road again for their next game Wednesday when they travel to face Dominican University at 7 p.m. in River Forest, Ill.
