Delivering a nearly flawless performance on both ends of the court, the Lakeland University women's basketball team snapped Wisconsin Lutheran College's 17-game winning streak and earned a win over a nationally ranked team with a 58-49 victory Tuesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies were ruthlessly efficient on the offensive end, frustrated the Warriors on defense, and as a result toppled a WLC team that just a day before had earned the first national ranking in school and NACC history at 25th in the latest D3hoops.com top 25 poll. Lakeland also gave Wisconsin Lutheran its first conference loss of the season and ended what was tied for the fourth-longest winning streak in NCAA Division III.
The Muskies were superb offensively and defensively. Lakeland shot an incredible 57.1% from the field, making 20 of 35 shots. That included knocking down 7 of 9 shots in the fourth quarter, when the Muskies also hit 9 of 11 from the foul line to seal the game up.
On the other end, Lakeland held Wisconsin Lutheran to its season low of 32.8% shooting. The Warriors made just 21 of 64 shots, and though they finished with 18 offensive rebounds, the guests turned those into just 11 second chance points.
The Muskies (13-7 overall, 10-5 NACC) extended their own winning streak to five games, with the difference in the game coming with yet another big fourth quarter. Lakeland outscored Lutheran 24-15 in the final 10 minutes, scoring on its final 12 offensive trips to close the game out.
The teams were tied 34-34 after three quarters, but the Muskies took the lead for what proved to be for good on a three-pointer by
Amanda Majewski (
So.-Peshtigo, Wis.). Lakeland soon followed with six straight points, capped by
Rachel Stankevich (
Sr.-Goodman, Wis.) feeding
Maddy Doll (
Sr.-Florence, Wis.) for a layup and a 43-36 lead with 6 minutes, 3 seconds to play.
The Warriors (17-2 overall, 14-1 NACC) did cut the deficit back down to 44-40 with 4:50 to play, but Lakeland continued to execute and allowed WLC to get no closer. A rebound and putback by
Miranda Jacobson (
Jr.-Felch, Mich.) gave the Muskies a 49-40 lead with 3:43 to play, and the Muskies made 7 of 8 free throws in the final two minutes to close it out.
Lakeland held the lead for better than 25 minutes and took control of the game late in the second quarter with an 11-0 run for a 24-19 halftime lead. WLC shot just 23.5% in the first half, missing a number of open shots in the lane against the Muskies' zone.
The Warriors' frustration continued in the third quarter, even as they came back from a 29-21 deficit to tie it by the end of the period. Jen Dowden scored eight points in the quarter but was just 10-for-27 for the game on her way to 21 points.
Jacobson scored 18 of her 20 points in the second half and also added 10 rebounds in the game. The junior made 7 of 10 field goals and all five of her free throws, one of a number of Muskies to perform well.
Stankevich also added 13 points and five assists, shooting 5 of 7 from the field.
Megan Will (
Fr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) also added 11 points off the bench with 4-for-6 shooting.
The Muskies are back home at the Woltzen Gymnasium again Saturday when they host Concordia University Chicago at 4:15 p.m.
