Concordia Chicago rallies back late, tips Muskies in overtime

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Concordia University Chicago came back from an 18-point fourth quarter deficit to send the game to overtime and went on to complete a huge comeback and defeat Lakeland University 87-78 in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference women's basketball game Saturday.

The Muskies' quality play for three quarters was negated late as the Cougars never led until the overtime period but completed a huge comeback to improve to 10-2 overall and 6-2 in conference play. Lakeland dropped to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the NACC.

The Muskies opened the game on a 9-0 run and led by 14 points in the first quarter and took a 41-29 lead into halftime. Lakeland extended its lead to 60-43 late in the third quarter and took its biggest lead on a layup by Rachel Hasko (So.-Racine, Wis.) making it 63-45 just five seconds into the fourth quarter.

The Cougars began their comeback from there, cutting their deficit to eight on Taylor Jacobsen's steal and layup making it 64-56. The Muskies scored five straight points, though, including a three-point play by Miranda Jacobson (Jr.-Felch, Mich.) pushing their lead back out to 69-56 with 5:02 left in the fourth quarter.

Concordia outscored Lakeland 15-2 the rest of regulation, though, including Jacobsen's layup with 18 seconds left to tie it and send the game to overtime. The Muskies missed eight of their final nine shots from the field and also had five turnovers over the final five minutes.

The Muskies took two early leads in overtime, first on two free throws by Jacobson and then after a layup by Stankevich, but Concordia took its first lead of the game on Annika Rae's three-pointer making it 76-75. The Cougars would score nine more points in a 12-0 run that lasted into the final minute and ended Lakeland's chances of pulling out the win.

Jacobson finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds and Stankevich added 19 points plus seven rebounds. Megan Will (Fr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) added 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench, Maddy Doll (Sr.-Florence, Wis.) totaled nine points plus 11 rebounds and five assists and Abby Nylund (Fr.-Crystal Falls, Mich.) added nine points in her first collegiate start. Nylund hit three three-pointers in the first half, part of the Muskies' five triples in the opening 20 minutes.

Lakeland shot 29 of 72 for the game, hitting 40.3% from the field, including 15 of 34 (44.1%) in the first half. The Muskies also outrebounded the Cougars 49-38 but were hurt by a season-high 29 turnovers against a Concordia team that had 21 steals and ranks among the NCAA Division III leaders in steals per game.

Jacobsen scored 30 points to lead the Cougars, including 21 in the fourth quarter and overtime. Crystal Corr added 22 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots. Concordia shot 42.1% for the game, making 32 of 76 shots including 10-for-32 from three-point range.

Lakeland is back in action when it hosts Rockford University Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
