Rockford controls second half in taking down Lakeland

Rockford University took advantage of several Lakeland turnovers and scored 31 unanswered points Saturday en route to a 37-20 win over the Muskies at Taylor Field.

The Regents won for the first time in three Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference games this season (2-4 overall), and also earned their first-ever win over Lakeland in 11 meetings.

The Muskies, the four-time defending NACC champs and the team picked to win the league again this season, are now 1-2 in league play and 1-5 overall.

Lakeland outgained the Regents on the day 377 yards to 302, but the Muskies finished with four turnovers that Rockford converted into 16 points.

Rockford opened the game's scoring with a late-first quarter touchdown, but the Muskies answered with a pair of scores and seemed poised to take control.

Sophomore quarterback Charl'Tez Nunnery (Liberty, Miss.) connected with senior Jamal Hawkins-Sconiers (St. James. Mo.) for a 67-yard TD, and followed up with a 67-yard TD connection to freshman Christian Chatman (Detroit, Mich.)

Rockford scored midway through the second quarter to take a 13-12 lead at the half, then scored the first 24 points of the second half to seal the victory.

The Muskies added a late score as sophomore Brice Kensey (New Orleans, La.) caught an 8-yard TD pass from Nunnery.

Chatman had four catches for 81 yards and Hawkins-Sconiers had two for 76. Nunnery finished 16 of 34 with 277 yards, three TDs and three interceptions. Junior Dez Eddie (Alexandria, La.) had 73 rushing yards on 11 carries for Lakeland.

Lakeland's defense recorded six sacks as Sam Bartlett (Jr.-Racine, Wis.) had 1.5 and Diante Moses (Sr.-Houston, Texas), Ezekiel Combs (So.-East Point, Ga.), Washington Vivanco (Jr.-Houston, Texas) and Chase Mitchell (Fr.-Minden, La.) had one each. Moses had 10 solo tackles.

The Muskies will try to rebound next Saturday at Wisconsin Lutheran. Saturday was the first time Lakeland has lost back-to-back conference games since 2012.
