Rade Novakovich netted a hat trick for Milwaukee School of Engineering and provided the difference in the match as the Lakeland University men's soccer team was defeated 4-1 in its final home game of the season Wednesday night at Taylor Field.
The high-scoring freshman Radakovich ran his season goal total to 16 for the Raiders, the regular season champions of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Lakeland played respectably against the conference champs but finished 0-11 in league play and is now 3-15 overall with one match to play Friday at Moody Bible Institute (Ill.).
The Muskies did a solid job of defending off MSOE's long ball attack, as the Raiders time and again tried to pass over the defense to forwards on the run. The Raiders had success twice, with Novakovich scoring his first goal in the 31st minute to make it 2-0 and then when he scored his third just over five minutes into the second half.
MSOE got on the board first just 5:30 into the match when Stephen Bagin knocked in a cross from the right side by Jack Van Dyke. The Raiders later scored two goals just 1:23 apart, with Novakovich following up his first goal with a second at 31:41 of the match after a through-ball assist from Joey Schauer.
Lakeland did hold MSOE scoreless for the final 39:51, and the Muskies even made a dent in the lead in the 83rd minute.
Ryoto Kinoshita (
Jr.-Kanagawa, Japan) did the work in the middle of the field and passed through the defense to
Shousei Suzuki (
Jr.-Tokyo, Japan) on the run on the right side, and Suzuki ran on and put it in the back left corner of the net for his second goal of the season.
The Raiders finished with a 15-6 advantage in shots. Kinoshita, Suzuki and
Cole Blandin (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) all finished with two shot attempts each.
Tyson Carter (
Fr.-Yakima, Wash.) made four save in goal for Lakeland. Patrick Grund got the start and made one save in goal for MSOE, which used three goalkeepers total.
