Muskies women’s soccer falls to Raiders in season finale

MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee School of Engineering forward Jill Ruark scored three goals and the Lakeland University women's soccer team saw its season come to a conclusion with a 7-0 loss Wednesday night on the road in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.

MSOE took advantage of an own goal for its first tally and scored three times in the first half and four more in the second to wrap up the third seed in the NACC Tournament next week. Lakeland closed out its season with a 5-12-2 overall record and finished 1-9-1 in NACC play.

The Raiders (11-9 overall, 8-3 NACC) dominated the match with a 39-2 advantage in shots. Still, it took a bit of fortune to score their first goal in the 19th minute, as a shot by Veronica Mangio hit the crossbar and then deflected off the back of goalkeeper Erin Tomlinson (Fr.-Madison, Wis.) and into the net for a 1-0 lead.

The hosts scored twice more in the first half, both with Ruark breaking away behind the defense. The second gave MSOE a 3-0 lead in the 34th minute that it would take into halftime, and the Raiders would score again just 3 minutes, 38 seconds after halftime with Jeray Riffel scoring from 15 yards out.

Ruark added her third goal in the 65th minute to make it 5-0, and Gracie Horton and Shelby Namen also added goals, including Namen scoring with 38 seconds left in the match.

Tomlinson made 12 saves in goal for Lakeland. Stephanie Figueroa (Sr.-Round Lake Park, Ill.) registered the team's lone shot on goal, while Tracey Sery (Fr.-Big Bend, Wis.) also added a shot attempt.

The match was the final one for Muskies seniors Figueroa and Marissa Brakob (Slinger, Wis.). Lakeland's final 5-12-2 record represented a slight improvement on last year's 5-13 mark, and it is the team's best overall mark since finishing 10-9 in 2008.
