Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Muskies never trail in topping Vikings for second straight win

APPLETON – The Lakeland University women's basketball team outscored Lawrence University in all four quarters and gradually pulled away for a 66-46 win in a non-conference game Thursday night on the road at Alexander Gymnasium.

The Muskies opened the game on a 10-1 run and never trailed in winning their second straight to start the season. Lakeland weathered a couple brief surges by the host Vikings in the first half to win comfortably.

Megan Will (So.-Lake Mills, Wis.) scored 14 points, making 7 of 10 from the field, and added nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Abby Nylund (So.-Crystal Falls, Mich.) also added a career-high 13 points, including three three-pointers.

Lakeland made four of its first five shots in building a quick nine-point lead at the game's start, and then played tug of war with the Vikings (0-2 overall) the rest of the half.

Lawrence cut the deficit back to three points in the first quarter before the Muskies stretched it back to double digits, only to see the hosts back within 25-20 in the second quarter. Lakeland scored the next nine points, though, starting with a three-pointer by Rachel Hasko (Jr.-Racine, Wis.), and the lead never dipped below double digits again.

The Muskies shot 39.3% (24 of 61) while holding Lawrence to 25.0% shooting (15 of 60). Hasko and freshman Hayley Walding (Bradenton, Fla.) also added nine points each, and Walding also added game highs of five assists and five steals.

Kenya Earl scored 20 points to lead Lawrence, while Leah Reeves added eight points plus 13 rebounds. The Vikings finished with a 47-38 rebounding advantage.

Lakeland is back home on Tuesday when it hosts the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
