NEW ULM, Minn. – A chilly shooting night caught up with the Lakeland University men's basketball team when Martin Luther (Minn.) College went on a run in the closing minutes to post a 70-60 win Monday night in a non-conference game.
The Knights went on a late 16-3 spurt to strike the final and deciding blow in a game that was close throughout, with neither team leading by more than six points until the final minutes. MLC earned its first-ever win over Lakeland in five tries, though, while the Muskies took their first loss of the season.
Lakeland (1-1 overall) had a cold night shooting the ball in every area. The Muskies made just 32.4% of their shots from the field (32.4%), including 4 of 27 from three-point range (14.8%). Even free throws didn't come easily, with Lakeland making just 10 of 22 (45.5%), including 6 of 15 in the second half.
Martin Luther (1-1 overall) shot 38.6% (22 of 57) and committed 17 turnovers. The hosts did make 10 of 18 from three-point range, though, and warmed up enough late to make 5 of 6 shots to take the lead for good, and then closed the game out at the free throw line.
The Muskies led 54-52 after two free throws by
Zach Hasenstein (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) with 5 minutes, 35 seconds to play, but the Knights scored six straight to take the lead for good, then answered a Lakeland free throw with a three-pointer by Josh Tomlin to make it 61-55 with 2:08 left.
Martin Luther then finished the game at the foul line over the final two minutes, making 9 of 14 from the stripe in that time. Tomlin's free throws with 56 seconds left soon pushed the margin to 10, and Nate Goelzer split two shots with 35 seconds left to make it 68-57.
The teams were tied on eight different occasions and also swapped the lead seven times. Lakeland took an early 10-4 lead for its largest margin, but Martin Luther held a 32-29 halftime lead.
Hasenstein finished with 13 points and both
Shakur Jinad (
Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) and
Carlos Campos (
Jr.-Janesville, Wis.) added 11 points each.
Garrett Duffin (
Sr.-Princeton, Ill.) also pitched in eight points plus a game-high 10 rebounds.
