Muskies close season at Aurora still with NACC title, playoff hopes

Lakeland University goes into its gridiron season finale still with plenty to play for when it travels to face Aurora University on Saturday at noon at Spartan Athletic Park in Montgomery, Ill.

The Muskies (4-5 overall, 4-2 NACC) enter their final contest with outside chances at a fifth straight Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference title and a fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Lakeland will need help for both, but can still lock up at least a tie for second in the NACC if it can defeat the Spartans (4-5 overall, 4-2 NACC) for the sixth straight year.

The Muskies come in after one of the wildest games in school history, when they knocked off previously undefeated Eureka 56-55 last week on Senior Day. Michael Moreau (Sr.-Crown Point, Ind.) rushed 21 yards for a score with 56 seconds left to give Lakeland its first lead of the game, and the Muskies defense stopped the Red Devils on a two-point conversion attempt going for the win with 18 seconds left. Lakeland fell behind 21-0 just 3:44 into the game and trailed for all but 1:14 of the contest, but the Muskies kept digging and stopped Eureka's 16-game regular season winning streak.
Aurora also comes in off a win after defeating Benedictine 41-24 on the road last week. Tyran Bailey set a school single-game record with 295 yards rushing and added three touchdowns, including runs of 56 and 53 yards in the second half and Aurora piled up 459 yards of offense for its third straight win.

Aurora is the longest-running opponent in Lakeland football history, with the series between the two schools dating back to the Muskies' first season in 1934. This is the 35th meeting all-time, and Lakeland took an 18-16 lead in the series after a 47-38 victory last year. Michael Whitley led a 75-yard drive in the final minute and hit Dezmon Eddie (Jr.-Alexandria, La.) for a five-yard touchdown pass with two seconds left for the go-ahead score, and Lakeland also added a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff as time ran out when Diante Moses (Sr.-Houston, Texas) recovered a fumble in the end zone after the Spartans attempted a number of laterals.
