Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Muskies make quick work of Concordia in three-set sweep

MEQUON – Desmond Williams (Jr.-Riverside, Calif.) and Dakota Hunter (Jr.-Waukesha, Wis.) tied a school varsity record for service aces in a match as the Lakeland University men's volleyball team swept Concordia University Wisconsin in three sets Saturday afternoon.

The Muskies rolled to a 25-11, 25-17, 25-9 victory. Lakeland won its third straight match and second consecutive to open their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference schedule.

Williams finished with 11 kills in 14 attacks for a .786 hitting percentage, coming up just shy of the varsity record for attack percentage in a match. Williams would've needed one more attempt for the 15 minimum needed to qualify for the record held by Matt Stolz with his .690 mark set with 22 kills and two errors in 29 swings on Feb. 5, 2016 against Wittenberg (Ohio) University.

Hunter also added seven kills on the day as well as seven digs and posted six of the Muskies' 11 service aces. His six aces tie a five-year old record set four years ago and a day by Tyler Boyce in Lakeland's first year as a varsity program in 2014.

Lakeland (4-5 overall, 2-0 NACC) trailed only briefly in the first two sets and not at all in the third against Concordia, which is in its first year as a varsity program and dropped to 0-12 overall and 0-2 in the NACC. The Muskies hit .288 as a team with 35 kills and 14 errors and also benefitted from the Falcons hitting -.062 with 16 kills and 20 errors.

Jacob Deener (Fr.-Lindenhurst, Ill.) added five kills in eight attacks, Addison Mertler (Jr.-Boca Raton, Fla.) totaled 29 assists and Williams had two block assists. Fourteen different players saw the court for the Muskies and all 14 posted at least one kill, assist or dig.

Sam Rovik posted four kills and Jeremy Theis finished with seven digs to lead the Falcons.

Lakeland is back home for a pair of matches next weekend, starting with a meeting with nationally ranked Benedictine University Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
