MILWAUKEE – The Lakeland University women's basketball team shot 56.5% from the field and defeated Alverno College 84-52 in its regular season finale Saturday night at Alverno's Reiman Gymnasium.
The Muskies never trailed against the shorthanded Inferno and won for the ninth time in 10 games, improving to 17-8 overall this season.
Lakeland also moved to 14-6 in the NACC this season, and learned before the game that it will host an NACC Tournament quarterfinal game on Wednesday. The Muskies will be the No. 4 seed in the tournament and will host No. 5 Concordia University Chicago at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
Against Alverno, Lakeland made 35 of 62 shots from the field, including 20 of 31 in shooting 64.5% in the second half. The Muskies led just 15-12 after one period but increased the margin to 37-20 by halftime and continued to stretch it out in the second half against an Inferno team that has been struck by injuries and played just five players almost the whole way.
Rachel Stankevich (
Goodman, Wis.) scored 18 points and also added six rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Amanda Majewski (
So.-Peshtigo, Wis.) scored 14,
Megan Will (
Fr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds and
Miranda Jacobson (
Jr.-Felch, Mich.) also added 10 points plus seven assists.
Gabby Hood scored a game-high 20 points and added seven rebounds and four assists for Alverno (5-20 overall, 2-18 NACC). The Inferno shot 39.5% (17 of 43) but made 15 of 16 from the foul line (93.8%).
Lakeland played a pair of overtime games against NACC tourney opponent Concordia Chicago earlier this season. The Cougars won 87-78 in River Forest, Ill., on Jan. 6, but the Muskies rebounded with a 90-85 win on Feb. 3 at home.
