Muskies held scoreless twice in a pair of losses in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – Runs were hard to come by as the Lakeland University softball team lost a pair of games on the second day of its spring break trip at the PFX Spring Games on Monday.

The Muskies were defeated by Saint Mary's (Ind.) College 6-0 in the afternoon and then came back and dropped a 2-0 decision to the University of Southern Maine. Lakeland dropped to 1-3 on its trip to Florida and is now 3-5 overall this season.

The Muskies were quiet with the bats in both games, with a combined seven hits over the two games. Other than senior Calie Delisi (Oak Forest, Ill.) with two hits against Southern Maine, no player had more than one hit on the day.

Lakeland faced a formidable opponent in its first game, as Saint Mary's improved to 8-0 this season. The Belles outhit the Muskies 12-3 and scored all six runs over the second, third and fourth innings while also getting a dominant pitching perfromances.

Saint Mary's hurler Morgan Raymer threw a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits. She struck out six and never allowed a runner past first base.

By contrast, Lakeland was in the second game from start to finish. The Muskies stranded 10 runners, including leaving the bases loaded in both the second and fifth innings, and put a runner on base in every single inning after the first.

Southern Maine (1-1 overall) scored the lone two runs in the third inning, with Amber Kelly doubling in the first run and Erin Martin following later with a bases-loaded hit by pitch. Rikki Vela (Jr.-Waukegan, Ill.) was the hard-luck losing pitcher, throwing a complete game and allowing seven hits and two runs with two strikeouts.

The Muskies return to action again Tuesday when they face the University of Wisconsin-River Falls at 8 a.m. Central time and then come back to take on Westfield State (Mass.) University at 1 p.m.
