CLERMONT, Fla. –
Hailey Jester (
Sr.-Salem, Wis.) went 4-for-4 at the plate and
Meghan Etten (
Jr.-Elkhorn, Wis.) drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning as Lakeland University defeated Fredonia State (N.Y.) University 5-3 at the PFX Spring Games.
The Muskies followed up a 1-0 loss to the University of New England (Maine) earlier in the day and closed out their spring break trip with a win over Fredonia. Lakeland finished its Florida trip with a 3-7 record and comes home at 5-9 overall this season.
The Muskies rallied from a 3-0 deficit in their finale, starting their comeback when Jester singled to score
Sabrina Wickman (
Fr.-Quinnesec, Mich.) for a run in the third inning.
Taylor Bush (
Jr.-Waukesha, Wis.) then hit a two-out, two-run single up the middle in the fourth to score Etten and
Amber Anderson (
Fr.-Chicago, Ill.) and tie the game at 3-3.
Lakeland weathered a hairy top of the fifth when four hits by Fredonia did not net a single run.
Calie Delisi (
Sr.-Oak Forest, Ill.) threw out a runner at home plate trying to score for the first out of the inning, and
Lindsay Cudecki (
So.-Chicago, Ill.) got out of the inning with a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
The Muskies then took the lead in the bottom of the inning, doing good work with two out.
Madi Olson (
So.-Eau Claire, Wis.) singled to start the rally, Anderson walked and Etten singled to score pinch runner
Jerrika McAlpine (
Fr.-Escanaba, Mich.).
Rosa Gonzalez (
Sr.-Elwood, Ill.) then followed with a single to score Anderson, and Lakeland made it hold up the rest of the way as Bush came on in relief of Cudecki and pitched two hitless innings for the save.
The win came after the Muskies lost a tough one in the opener in a pitcher's duel. The game was scorelss until the sixth inning, when New England's Andrea Gosper led off the inning and later scored on an infield single by pinch hitter Sarah Lachapelle.
Leah Binsfeld (
Fr.-Kaukauna, Wis.) started the game in the circle, and she and Bush combined to allow just seven hits. Binsfeld pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits, before Bush came on for the final 1 1/3 and allowed three hits and the lone run.
Jester finished with two hits in the first game and was 6-for-6 at the plate on the day. Anderson also was 2-for-3 in the opener and finished with four hits over the two games.
The Muskies are now idle until the end of the month, with their next games coming Saturday, March 31 with a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Rockford University starting at noon.
