Cameron Ekum (
Fr.-Wales, Wis.) delivered 14 kills, 18 assists, nine digs and a service ace on match point and the Lakeland University men's volleyball team defeated nationally ranked Milwaukee School of Engineering in four sets Wednesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies picked up their first win over a ranked team this season, coming back in impressive fashion after losing the first set for a 21-25, 25-18, 25-18, 27-25 victory. Lakeland defeated the team ranked 15th in the latest AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 15 Coaches Poll and also earned an important Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference in improving to 10-14 overall and 4-5 in conference.
The Muskies did not blink after the Raiders (11-6 overall, 8-3 NACC) got off to an early lead in the match, seizing momentum and controlling most of the final three sets. Lakeland won the second and third sets comfortably and also was cruising through the fourth set before working through a rough patch late.
Lakeland appeared well on its way to victory when it used a 9-1 run to take a 19-12 lead in the fourth set. MSOE rallied with a 9-1 run of its own, though, and led 23-22 after a service ace by Neil Naughton.
The Muskies fought off a pair of set points for the Raiders and got kills from
Noah Cotterman (
Jr.-Glendale, Ariz.) and
Dakota Hunter (
Jr.-Waukesha, Wis.) to take a 26-25 lead. Ekum then uncorked a serve that landed untouched just inside the back line, his third ace of the match the clincher as Lakeland defeated a ranked team for the first time since topping No. 5 Stephenson (Md.) University on Jan. 21, 2017.
Lakeland hit .261 as a team with 45 kills and 14 errors, including just six errors through the first three sets. The Muskies hit .407 in the second set to turn the match around after MSOE won the first set.
Ekum's career-high 14 kills came with just two errors in 36 swings for a .333 hitting percentage. He also paced the team with his three aces and came up just a dig shy of a triple-double.
Hunter also added 11 kills and
Desmond Williams (
Jr.-Riverside, Calif.) also posted nine kills without an error in 15 attempts (.600 hitting percentage) plus five blocks. The considerably shorter Muskies put up the far better block with 10 blocks to just five for the Raiders.
J.T. Levitt (
Jr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) finished with 15 digs and
Addison Mertler (
Jr.-Boca Raton, Fla.) added 21 assists. Hunter added nine digs and
Trevor Perry (
Sr.-Millilani, Hawaii) posted five kills, four blocks and two aces.
Logan Baerenwald led MSOE with 12 kills and Andrew Miller added 45 assists. The Raiders hit .258 as a team with 55 kills and 22 errors, and the guests also were badly hurt by 20 service errors.
Lakeland returns to action Friday night when it travels to face Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee at 7 p.m. The Muskies will take aim at a second straight win over a ranked team, as the Wolves are currently fourth in the NAIA rankings.
