LISLE, Ill. – Adriel Rivas piled up 17 kills for Benedictine University and the Lakeland University men's volleyball team was defeated by another nationally ranked team Friday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.
The Muskies were swept in three sets by a score of 25-16, 25-22, 25-15, falling to the team currently ranked fifth in the latest AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 15 Coaches Poll. The Eagles completed a sweep of the season series between the teams, while Lakeland dropped to 10-16 overall and 4-6 in conference play.
Benedictine (17-4 overall, 8-1 NACC) needed five sets to defeat Lakeland in the teams' first match on Feb. 16, but the Eagles were in charge much of the way in this one. The hosts hit .322 as a team with 41 kills and just 13 errors, dominating the first and third sets and overcoming an early Muskies' advantage in the second set.
Lakeland hit just .070 for the match with 21 kills and 16 errors.
Desmond Williams (
Jr.-Riverside, Calif.) posted seven kills,
Cameron Ekum (
Fr.-Wales, Wis.) finished with six and
Dakota Hunter (
Jr.-Waukesha, Wis.) added five kills, and the three were the only Muskies to finish with hitting percentages above zero.
Lakeland lost the first set handily but had an opening in the second set, building a four-point lead at 11-7. The Eagles responded with a 6-1 run, though, and answered late in the set every time the Muskies would draw close.
Ekum and
Addison Mertler (
Jr.-Boca Raton, Fla.) both finished with 10 assists each, while Williams led the defense at the net with five blocks.
Matt Misheck (
Fr.-Oak Forest, Ill.) also added three blocks.
Rivas paced Benedictine with a .500 hitting percentage that included 17 kills and just four errors. Elijah Medlock added 11 kills.
The Muskies are back in action Saturday when they face Aurora University on the road at 1 p.m.
