Raiders stop Muskies in NACC Tournament quarterfinal

MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee School of Engineering boasted three players with at least 10 kills and the Lakeland University men's volleyball team was unable to match that firepower in a three-set loss in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinals Tuesday night.

The Muskies saw their season end with a 25-21, 25-21, 25-19 loss to the third-seeded Raiders. MSOE advanced to a semifinal matchup against No. 2 seed Benedictine on Thursday, while Lakeland saw its season end with a 9-20 record.

The Muskies were the sixth seed of six teams in the inaugural NACC men's volleyball tourney but had reasonable hope of defeating the higher-seeded Raiders coming in. The teams split a pair of matchups in the regular season, including Lakeland winning the last meeting in four sets on March 21 and also playing close before losing in five sets the first time they played in Milwaukee.

MSOE (14-11 overall) had a significant advantage on the attack in the third matchup, though, hitting .276 to Lakeland's .133. Logan Baerenwald finished with 11 kills and Jake Christensen and Sam Stealey both added 10 kills each as the Raiders posted 42 kills and just 15 errors.

The Muskies had a good chance to get the early match lead, taking a three-point lead near the midway point of the first set. Lakeland then fought back from being down 19-16 to tie the set at 20-20 and then again at 21-21, but MSOE closed the set with the final four points, including three kills plus a block.

The Muskies played from behind most of the final two sets. The Raiders never trailed in winning the second set, and then scored six straight points in the third set to break out to a lead.

Dakota Hunter (Jr.-Waukesha, Wis.) led the Lakeland attack with 10 kills, while Cameron Ekum (Fr.-Wales, Wis.) also added eight kills plus a team-high 11 digs and nine assists. The rest of the team combined for just nine kills, though, including five by and Desmond Williams (Jr.-Riverside, Calif.).

Addison Mertler (Jr.-Boca Raton, Fla.) paced Lakeland with 14 assists and added seven digs. J.T. Levitt (Jr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) also added seven digs. The match was the final for one Lakeland senior, and Trevor Perry (Mililani, Hawaii) finished with one kill.

Andrew Miller totaled 35 assists for MSOE, which also got 12 digs from Danny Martens. The Raiders also finished with a 6-0 advantage in service aces.
