Edgewood comes back twice to hand Lakeland pair of losses

VERONA, Wis. – Edgewood College rallied late in both games and the Lakeland University softball team was on the wrong end of a tough doubleheader sweep Tuesday afternoon at Ceniti Park.

The Eagles won the first game 4-3 and then outlasted the Muskies 10-7 in the second to win both ends of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference double feature. The games were rescheduled for Tuesday after being postponed due to cold and field conditions on Saturday.

Lakeland (7-11 overall, 2-2 NACC) led 3-2 as late as the fifth inning of the first game on the strength of a three-run third that included a two-run double by Hailey Jester (Sr.-Salem, Wis.) and an ensuing RBI single by Meghan Etten (Jr.-Elkhorn, Wis.).

Edgewood (10-8 overall, 2-2 NACC) came back, though, with Amanda Meister singling in the tying run in the bottom of the fifth. The Eagles then got a home run from pitcher Shannon Whitmus to lead off the sixth that proved to be the game-winner.

The Muskies got off to a good start in the second game, scoring three times in the first and two more in the second, but the Eagles slugged their way back with five home runs and scored in five of their six at bats.

Amber Andersen (Fr.-Chicago, Ill.) hit a sacrifice fly and Niki Saviano (So.-Orland Park, Ill.) drove in a run with an infield single in the first to get Lakeland an early lead. The Muskies then answered two runs by Edgewood in the bottom of the first with two more in the second as Calie Delisi (Sr.-Oak Forest, Ill.) hit a two-run home run.

The Eagles roared back to take an 8-5 lead before Lakeland answered with two in the sixth. Etten hit a sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Jerrika McAlpine (Fr.-Escanaba, Mich.), and Delisi reached on an error that allowed Leah Binsfeld (Fr.-Kaukauna, Wis.) to score. Edgewood scored two more again in the sixth, but Lakeland had a chance to extend the game in the seventh, loading the bases with two out before Etten popped out to end the game.

Delisi, Etten and Jester all had three hits each on the day to lead Lakeland at the plate. Lindsay Cudecki (So.-Chicago, Ill.) pitched a complete game in the opener but took the tough loss, allowing nine hits and four runs with two strikeouts. Rikki Vela (Jr.-Waukegan, Ill.) came on in relief and was credited with the loss in the second game, allowing three runs in one inning with a strikeout.

The Muskies will try again to play their home opener Wednesday when they host Milwaukee School of Engineering for a twinbill starting at 3 p.m.
