ROSEMONT, Ill. – Dominican University's Marissa Burns scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to send Lakeland University to a 3-2 loss in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday.
The Stars also won the first game 3-0 and with the second win finished the sweep of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference twinbill. The games were played inside at The Dome at the Ballpark indoor facility, moved there from Dominican's usual home field due to the continued snowy and wet spring weather.
The Muskies (8-14 overall, 3-5 NACC) had trouble scoring runs most of the day but finally broke through to score twice to take the lead in the sixth inning of the second game.
Hailey Jester (
Sr.-Salem, Wis.) doubled to lead off the inning,
Meghan Etten (
Jr.-Elkhorn, Wis.) followed with a double to tie the game, and
Calie Delisi (
Sr.-Oak Forest, Ill.) singled to second base to score Etten after she had stolen third base.
Dominican (11-15 overall, 3-5 NACC) came back to tie it in the bottom of the sixth as Cat Klostermann doubled and came around to score on a fielder's choice. The game went to extra innings and the Muskies did put two runners on in the top of the eighth but could not score, and the Stars scored quickly in the bottom of the frame. Burns reached on a bunt single and then came all the way around to score on an error after Klostermann's sacrifice bunt was thrown away.
The Muskies got solid pitching performances in both games, including a pair of complete games.
Niki Saviano (
So.-Orland Park, Ill.) threw a complete game in the second game and allowed six hits and three ones (one earned).
Lindsey Cudecki (
So.-Chicago, Ill.) also threw six innings in the opener, allowing eight hits and three runs.
Lakeland was held to just three hits in the opener as Klostermann pitched a complete game and struck out eight. She received all the run support she'd need with single runs in the first, second and fifth innings, including an RBI double in the first by Burns.
Delisi had two hits in the first game and added two in the second to lead Lakeland.
Paige Chladek (
So.-Chicago, Ill.) also hits in both games for the Muskies.
Lakeland is back on the field Saturday when it travels to face Alverno College for a doubleheader starting at noon in Milwaukee.
