Muskies step up a level in competition, defeated by UW-Milwaukee

GLENDALE, Wis. – The Lakeland University baseball team had the rare opportunity to play an NCAA Division I team when it faced the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Wednesday afternoon at Henry Aaron Field.

Lakeland was defeated 10-1 by the Panthers in a single nine-inning game played at UWM's home field. The Muskies played a Division I team for the first time in 14 years, since losing both ends of a doubleheader against Northern Illinois on March 20, 2004.

Lakeland (8-21 overall) stayed with the Panthers early before UWM scored four times in the fourth and three more in the fifth to pull well ahead. The Muskies nearly matched Milwaukee in the hit department, as they were outhit just 11-8, but three walks and four hit batsmen by Lakeland pitchers helped UW-Milwaukee take advantage of its opportunities.

The Muskies did get on the board in the seventh inning to prevent UWM winning in seven innings on the 10-run rule. Connor Hilburn (Jr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) tied for game high honors with three hits, and he singled with two outs in the top of the seventh to score Brian Bridges (Jr.-North Chicago, Ill.).

Alberto Oliveras (Fr.-Fort Myers, Fla.) and Peyton Knoll (Jr.-Linden, Mich.) also added two hits each. Zach Devore (Fr.-Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Ryan Oharriz (Jr.-Pembroke Pines, Fla.) led the pitching staff, combining for three scoreless innings at the end.

Trevor Schwecke led UW-Milwaukee, going 3-for-3 with three runs batted in. Panthers starter Alex McIntosh pitched four scoreless innings, allowing three hits while fanning six.

Lakeland wraps up its season Saturday when it hosts Rockford University for a final Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader. It will be Senior Day for the Muskies, with the twinbill beginning at noon.
