Shannon Bishop (
Jr.-River Grove, Ill.) and
Neenah Primas (
So.-Oostburg, Wis.) both received all-tourney honors and the Lakeland University women's volleyball team won two more matches Saturday to finish a 4-0 start to the season at its own Lakeland Volleyball Tournament presented by Discovery Coaches.
The Muskies outlasted Wisconsin Lutheran College in five sets for a 21-25, 29-27, 25-22, 20-25, 15-7 victory in their first match of the day, and then closed out the tourney with a 25-22, 30-28, 25-19 win over Oglethorpe (Ala.) University. Lakeland won the unofficial tournament title and is off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 2012.
Bishop and Primas headlined the seven-player all-tournament team, posting tourney highs in kills and assists, respectively. Bishop finished with 51 kills over four matches and added 41 digs, while Primas led all players with 136 assists and also added 33 digs, nine blocks, and 15 kills without an error in 38 attacks (.395 hitting percentage).
Lakeland also received standout performances from
Emma Bruder (
Sr.-Frankfort, Ill.) and
Shelby Welsh (
Sr.-Ogallala, Neb.) in the opening win against Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference foe Wisconsin Lutheran, a non-conference match between conference foes. Bruder posted a career-high 27 digs against the Warriors, while Welsh added 13 kills plus 19 digs as the Muskies rebounded after losing the first set, and then pulled away in the fifth set after WLC rallied to send the match to a deciding set.
The Muskies had to work to close out the tourney with a perfect record, rallying from deficits late in the first two sets against Oglethorpe. The Stormy Petrels from Atlanta, Ga., finished the tourney with a 0-4 mark, but led 22-20 late in the first set and had a set point in the second set. Lakeland scored the final five points in the first set, though, including kills by Bishop and
Emilie Schartner (
Sr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) and a service ace by
Allison Byrne (
Jr.-Luxemburg, Wis.), and the Muskies also scored the final three points to win an extra-long second set.
Megan Goeser (
So.-Plymouth, Wis.) led the Muskies with 11 kills and
Brianna Johnson (
Sr.-Altoona, Wis.) totaled a team-high 17 digs. Goeser also led all tournament players with 21 blocks over four matches, while Bruder's 72 digs for the weekend also were high of all players.
the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse finished with the second-best record in the round-robin tourney with a 3-1 mark, including wins over Cardinal Stritch University and Oglethorpe on Saturday. Stritch posted a 2-2 mark for the weekend while Wisconsin Lutheran finished 1-3.
Lakeland is next in action on Wednesday when it travels to face the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for a 7 p.m. first serve.
