Lakeland University finishes a formidable non-conference schedule with another stern test this week as it travels to face the University of Wisconsin-Platteville for a 6 p.m. kickoff Saturday night at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
The Muskies will face the Pioneers of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the third straight year, including their second straight trip to Platteville. UWP defeated Lakeland 56-22 last year, building a 28-0 lead and later dominating the fourth quarter after the Muskies had closed within 42-22.
Lakeland comes into the game with a 0-2 record after a 56-6 loss to No. 17-ranked Trine (Ind.) this past Saturday. The Thunder gained 670 yards of offense, including 486 on the ground, and pulled away in the second quarter to build a 28-0 halftime lead. Lakeland gained 240 yards on the ground and
Larry Rivers provided the biggest highlight with a 75-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Albert Journet led the Lakeland defense with seven tackles, a sack and a pass breakup.
UW-Platteville (1-1 overall) also is coming off a loss in its last game, when it was defeated by Thomas More (Ky.) 35-28. The Pioneers built a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Saints came back to tie it by halftime and then took their first lead of the game late in the fourth quarter. Platteville piled up 448 yards of offense, including 372 yards passing by Colin Schuetz, but converted just 2 of 14 third downs.
The Pioneers hold a 3-1 lead in the all-time series. The Muskies' lone win in the series came in the first meeting on Sept. 5, 1998, a 21-14 victory in the season opener. Kevin Fix passed for 201 yards and Curtis Beals rushed for 103 yards and a TD, and the Lakeland defense forced six UWP turnovers.
