Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Jacobson, Will again come up big as Lakeland wins at Dominican

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Miranda Jacobson (Sr.-Felch, Mich.) and Megan Will (So.-Lake Mills, Wis.) led the way again and the Lakeland University women's basketball team picked up a road victory with a 63-54 conquest of Dominican University Saturday afternoon at the Igini Sports Forum.

The Muskies took the lead late in the first quarter and never gave it back, withstanding a late Dominican rally to win their 10th straight game. Lakeland improved to 13-2 overall and 9-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, staying right amidst the leaders in the conference, and also continued the best Muskies start through 15 games since the 2001-02 squad opened with a 14-1 mark through 15 games.

Jacobson scored 21 points, including an 8-for-8 showing at the foul line, and also added nine rebounds and three steals. Will also posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds and added three blocked shots.

The two provided the difference in a game where both teams held the other in check from the field. Lakeland shot 35.0% (21 of 60), while Dominican shot 32.2% (19 of 59).

The Muskies again led almost the entire way, breaking out from an early back-and-forth. Lakeland scored 10 straight points overlapping the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second to take a 19-9 lead, and the margin held steady to halftime with the Stars only getting within 28-22 at the break.

The Muskies pulled away in the third quarter with 14 straight points while holding Dominican (9-6 overall, 5-5 NACC) scoreless for a stretch of 5:56. Six different players scored in the run, which was capped by Will's basket inside making it 44-24 with 3:40 left in the third quarter.

Lakeland would hold a significant lead well into the fourth quarter, when the Stars made a final run to cause a few nervous moments. Dominican scored 10 straight points and got within 54-48 after Timiya Ray split two free throws with 56 seconds to play, but the Muskies got it inside to Will on their next possession to up the lead to eight and end the threat.

Amanda Majewski (Jr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) scored nine points and Kacey Gardner (Fr.-Evergreen Park, Ill.) added seven points off the bench. The Muskies again dominated inside with a 36-10 advantage in points in the paint and also posted a big 19-2 edge in points off turnovers. Lakeland also made 18 of 21 from the free throw line (85.7%), including 14 of 15 in the second half.

Amari Stafford scored 13 points but was the only player scoring in double figures for Dominican, which made 7 of 18 from three-point range (38.9%) but committed 18 turnovers. The Stars did finish with 12 blocked shots, including six from Nyema Burns and five more from Ray.

Lakeland now gets ready for a showdown for first place in the NACC on Wednesday when it travels to face Wisconsin Lutheran College at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee. The Warriors at 10-1 in conference play hold a one-half game lead over the Muskies and Benedictine University for the top spot in the league.
